Assignments belong at the source. Publish your consulting needs on your own website, and let consultants and agencies find them there.

An open standard for companies that work with consultants. Free to use, with nothing to sign up for.

The problem

The same assignment is described in a dozen places. Most of them are out of date.

  • Recreated everywhere

An assignment is written once, then retyped on every platform and in every inbox where it might be seen.

  • Quickly out of date

Details change with you. The copies stay as they were, sometimes long after the assignment is filled.

  • Unclear origin

Nobody can tell which version is the original, or who to turn to.

  • Missed matches

Companies and consultants who would suit each other never find out.

The idea

From the company to the consultant.

When a company needs expertise, it should be able to publish that need directly. No need to recreate the same assignment across multiple platforms.

OpenAssignment makes consulting assignments available as structured, machine-readable data. Everyone works from the same information, maintained by the company that needs the work.

Agencies can still source candidates, qualify consultants, manage procurement and facilitate agreements. OpenAssignment simply gives everyone a common, reliable starting point.

How it works

Publish once. Stay current everywhere.

  1. Describe

Write down what you need: the role, the skills, where, how much and when.

  2. Publish

Add a feed to your website. Your developer sets it up once, and the documentation covers the rest.

  3. Connect

Consultants, agencies and matching services read from your site and always link back to you.

  4. Close

When the assignment is filled, you say so in one place and everyone sees it.

What others see

Always the current version. Always from you.

This is how an assignment you publish can be presented by any service that reads your feed. Every detail comes straight from your website, with a link back to the source. The company and the assignment are fictional.

Agencies and platforms

A better foundation for everyone.

Open standards don't remove the need for expertise in sourcing, matching or procurement.

They remove the need to maintain the same information in multiple places.

Agencies and platforms remain free to build services around the information: helping companies discover talent, evaluating candidates, coordinating assignments and managing relationships.

The difference is that the original information stays with the company that owns it.

Who does what

A decision for the business. A small task for a developer.

For the business

Decide which assignments to publish and what to say about them. When something changes, or the assignment is filled, you update it in one place.

Why we are doing this

For the developer

A feed on your website: a few files in an open format, generated from the system where your assignments already live. The documentation explains every step.

Read the documentation

The other half

You publish what you need. Consulting companies publish who can do it.

OpenConsultant is the sister standard for consulting companies. They publish consultant profiles, skills and availability on their own websites in the same open way.

The two standards bring assignments and consultants closer together, but neither depends on the other.
